Bombeck Depression

I’m sure you’ve never heard of this particular form of depression before. But I assure you it is as real as the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop held every other year (even years) in Dayton, Ohio. Read on and learn more about this agonizing state of being.

Oh, whoa is me. I am in agony. I attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I have always suffered from the occasional blues. But I fear now I am in the depths of a serious depression, Bombeck Depression. You see, I attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

Today is May 17, 2010. It has been five weeks since I was at the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I am home in Florida now, a beautiful, sunny state with weather so unlike what we saw when I attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010. But the sun does not give me what I need to climb out of this place.

I have my own vehicle here and can drive where I want and when I want. Unlike riding the busses when I attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I haven’t spent one night in the emergency room since I came home. Unlike the first day I spent while attending the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I made lots of new friends when I attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010. They all went home the same day I did. I wonder if they miss me as much as I miss them and the energy that was sparked by sharing ideas when we attended the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I haven’t had to laugh as much since I came home from the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I haven’t had to think as much about writing since I came home from the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

I haven’t had to hustle from one session to another. Or listen to interesting speakers who filled all of us with ideas, energy, enthusiasm, and a love for the craft of writing since I left the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 2010.

There won’t be another Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop held in Dayton, Ohio until the year 2012. Whatever shall I do until then?

I still have my friends. We have been communicating for a couple years via e-mail on the official e-mail group of the workshop, humor_writers@yahoogroups.com. I also have the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Group on Facebook and the official site of the workshop at www.humorwriters.org. I’m beginning to feel a little better about all of this.

I have the books to read that I purchased there, some with autographs. They make me smile and laugh and feel better, whether I want to or not.

I have the photos taken there. Some miraculously without EB Heron in them. Who could forget the last night with Matt wearing EB’s crown? I have photos as evidence. More smiles.

But more that that I have my memories.

Only 700 more days (give or take a week or two) until the next meeting of these crazy, wonderful, inspiring, insane, friends meet again at the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop in Dayton, Ohio in 2012. Not that I’m counting the days.

  1. Could it possibly be that this is a masked form of Sam Depression? That occurs a lot when people attend the greatest conferences ever on April 15th and discover a month later that they forgot to file their tax returns.

  2. That’s why we’re on Facebook…to keep each other sane!

  3. Wanda, I couldn’t agree more! And every conference I go to leads to even more severe withdrawal symptoms. I’ll be counting down those 700 days with you!
